Safety Fast! Notes for July 2004

Summer's here! Actually, late May is here as I write (blasted copy deadlines…) but the weather thinks it is summer! We will probably have had snow by the time you have read this.

I've a couple of May events to report on. The Wessex Sprint was a big success as usual with 140 entries including 40 MGs. Fastest MG was the MGB GT V8 (4.6 litre!) of John Dignan. Fastest MG on index was Russell Morgan in his 'K'-series Midget. The best in class 'A1' for 1275 Midgets was Paul Heyting, and the best in the class for four cylinder MGBs was Mike Cole.

The Wye Valley Social Run provides this month's photo. As it was only yesterday, I have yet to receive the official report - but the sky looks blue and the photos I received from Phil Archer show a nice selection of MG's so I think its reasonable to assume that a good time was had by all.

I told you about the Dorset Social Run in last month's notes. To recap, the event is on Sunday 11th July, starting and finishing at Canford School in Wimbourne. The school was originally a medieval manor and the grounds are said to be beautiful. The run is billed as a scenic tour of Dorset - the countryside around this area is certainly well worth a visit. Mark Rathbone is the organiser; his number is 01202 692908. I also told you about the Pucklechurch Gymkhana on Sunday 18th July. A gymkhana is huge fun, whether you are a novice or a seasoned competitor. Give Jon Pittard a ring on 01275 879632 and he will no doubt persuade you to enter, or to marshal, or both. The California Cup Autotests, held on the Saturday of Silverstone Weekend, are the club's premier autotests and (you've guessed it) are organised by the SW Centre. Entry forms are in last month's pullout section, but Clive Holloway on 0117 985 7309 is sure to have spare copies. Is anybody interested in making up an MGB team? The last event in July is the Bristol Pegasus Motor Club Castle Combe Track Day (phew!) on the 31st, organised by our friends at the Bristol Pegasus Motor Club. John Delafield has the details - his number is 01453 544497.

Into August and the Mendip Production Car Trial on Sunday 8th. It's in the usual place with the usual rules - Bruce Weston will fill you in, his number is 01963 440941. A new event for this year is the run to Shelsey Walsh Festival on Sunday 15th. I'll give you a more details next month, but if you cannot wait then please call Phil Archer on 01454 633209. Our Chairman Dave Coppock will once again organise the Chew Valley Gymkhana on Sunday 22nd. If cow pats are your thing, then this an event that should not be missed. Seriously, this event is the perfect advertisement for grass roots motorsport. Give Dave a ring on 01934 834429 for more information.

Finally, a brief reminder of September's events - Wiscombe Hillclimb on the 11th, the Bristol Sunday Lunch Run on the 19th and the Patchway Autotests on the 26th.

A full summer of MG events for me then - I'm not sure how I'm going to break that news to Michčle…
