Safety Fast! Notes for August 2008

This month the job for compiling notes for the South West Centre has fallen on the ‘New Boy’ of the committee, so I hope I am able to emulate those who have been doing this for some time.

The MG season is now well and truly under way, and the South West Centre’s calendar of events is already half way completed, which means by the time you read this we will have had; 3 ‘Day Out’s’ 3 Gymkhanas, 1 Trail, 1 Sprint and 1 Auto Test. This should have catered for all tastes in things MG, and we still have a mixed bag of events still to come, these include;

17th of August. A run to the oldest continuously used Motor Sports venue in the World, Shelsley Walsh. Details from yours truly or click here.

24th of August. The Mendip Production Car Trial, Chew Stoke, on the outskirts of Bristol. This is a fantastic venue; with a varied number of tests, and a fantastic view from the top of the hill as a reward should you be lucky/skilful to make a clean sweep. In September the Centre is supporting the Midget Register Road Run, if you have not done this before I strongly recommend it, how Dennis Warf manages to compile a run of 60 – 70 miles on empty roads, I do not know. The route directions are clear, and his attention to detail is superb, all you have to do is follow the instructions or a magical day out. Dennis can be contacted on 01296 714232, or the entry form can be downloaded from the Midget Register web page. http://www.mg-cars.org.uk/mgcc/midgetreg/index.shtml

On the 13th of September the Centre’s premier event Wiscombe Hill Climb, Nr Honiton takes place, set in the glorious grounds of Wiscombe Park. You can watch this event from the sidelines, or you can get close to the action by volunteering as a Marshal, Jon Pittard would love to hear from you if you think this is for you, his No is 01275879632

These are some of the official South West Centres events, but the Centre does support a number of other motoring events, some with more MG content than others, but none the less we are there. In May John and Mavis Bird, Andrew and Sue Owst and my wife Janice and I attended the Spridget 50th Birthday Party at Gaydon, this was a fantastic day out, and well told elsewhere in Safety Fast, I would just like to say a personal thank you to those who took the time and effort to put on the event.

One of the other events the Centre attends every year is Le Mans, and this year despite it clash of dates with Silverstone 6 cars from the Centre made the trip to Le Sarthe to cheer on number 25, the MG Lola, guys if you read this, better luck next year, but thank you for the sight of the ‘Octagon’ circulating it was great whilst it lasted.
