Extract from June's Octagon Car Club Bulletin

Secretary’s Notes

Yet some more events that you should find the Club at this year are as follows, June 28/29 is the date of MG Ecosse. This is held at Doune Motor Museum and is Scotland’s premier MG event. Well worth going to. July 12/13 will find us at Surrey 97. This event organised by Epsom area of the MGOC at the Leatherhead Leisure Centre, is relaxed and enjoyable. A very pleasant weekend. Andy Greenwood is again organising a Cheshire MG day at Capesthorpe Hall, Macclesfield, Cheshire on Sunday 27th July. A free car pass to this event is enclosed for members living in the relevant area.

Members living in the States can go along to University Motors 21st Annual MG Summer Party from August 14-17. Further details of this event can be obtained from University Motors, 6490 East Fulton, Ada, MI 49301-9006. Tel. (616) 682 0800.

Members living in France will also find elsewhere in the Bulletin a list of events that our French branch will have representation at.

Two more English events that members have been invited to are as follows: MG Car Club Midland Centre ‘Midsummer “Classic” Car Gathering’ on the evening of Wednesday 25 June 1997 (sorry about the late notice of this but I have only just been informed). There are 3 runs from different venues which all finish at the Whittington Inn, near Kinver on the A49. For full details contact Brian Osborn on 0121 453 3380.

S.E. Centre of the MG Car Club are holding their Autumn Gathering on Sunday 21 September at Penshurst Place and Gardens, Penshurst, Tonbridge, Kent. Octagon members are invited to participate and entry forms can be obtained from Jenny Morgan, 40 Lime Meadow Avenue, Sanderstead, South Croydon, Surrey CR2 9AR.

The final event to get a mention this month is the Art Deco weekend, which is being organised by Geoff Shirt over the weekend of 6/7 September at the Midlands Grand Hotel, Morecambe. Information packs containing an entry form are available from Geoff Shirt, Syda Farmhouse, Holymoorside, Chesterfield, Derbyshire S42 7HW. Tel. 01246 567206.

I now have enough cars for the Retro Show at the NEC which is being held over the weekend of 9/10 August. We are still in need of cars for Harrogate MG 97 on 2-3 August. The Northern Classic Car Show, G-Mex on 2 November (please note that this is now a one day event) and the final event of the year. The International Car Show, NEC on November 15/16.

For members wishing to take an Autumn break, might be interested in attending the 1997 Manx Classic, which is being held from 18 to 21 September 1997. Having attended this event in the past, I can assure you that the sight of cars racing on roads is something not to be missed. Further details can be obtained from the Manx Motor Racing Club, The Motorey, Nobles Park, Douglas, Isle of Man, IM2 4BD. Tel. 01624 670149.

Of interest to those of our members who normally go to Le Mans each year, is a new publication called ‘Le Mans 1997 Spectators Guide’. Unfortunately as I have only just been notified about it, it will be no use to you this year. It is packed with information on the event, where to go, what to do and not do, plus costs etc, at £5, including postage I would recommend it. They are planning to do a 1998 guide and are looking for exploits from this years events. They can be contacted at JMR, PO BOX 795, Long Field, Kent, DA3 8ZY. Now that we are onto publications, I would like to mention a new series of books that have recently been published on MG’s. They are published by Unique Motoring Portfolios and are a compilation of articles taken from various sources, such as Motor Sport, Light Car, Light Car and Cyclecar etc. Quite a lot of it is new material that has not been reproduced before. There are 6 titles in the series, Advertising MG 1929 to 1969, MG Magnette (50s), and MGB, all at £9.00 plus postage and a larger publication MG Cars 1929-1965 at 㾸.50. All the above titles can be obtained from me at Unit 19, Hollins Business Centre, Rowley Street, Stafford, ST16 2RH. Don’t forget that postage will have to be added.

We are now ready to print a new list of spares that are available through the Club. The format is different in that the items are not listed across the page by model and that the price given does not include VAT. This should give you a better comparison of the benefits obtainable by being a Club member. If possible, please order by product code.

Hope to see you at the Shows.

Happy MotorinG

Harry
