Rostyle Revival! We had been contemplating restoring OAT 54V's Rostyles for a couple of years, with the idea of painting the wheels in rotation (terrible pun - Ed.), using a couple of rims which we had obtained in primer. For whatever reason, we never got round to it. We saw a set of five wheels advertised - the seller pointed out that they were in the correct silver, but without the black detail. No problem! We just happened to have bought the kit for the wheels, with the adhesive masks, paint and all.... The first attempt with the mask showed us that while it was die cut and accurate, the wheels were not! There was no way it could go on with the correct alignment. Scratch head and finish cup of coffee.
Flash of inspiration - why should it go on in one piece? Jill tore up the next mask, and got the corners aligned, and then filled in the other bits.
On to wider masking tape, the outside of the rim was protected against overspray...:
...and on with the black:
Following the instructions, the masking was carefully peeled away before the paint was completely dry - a lovely finish! The following day, we used a fine wet and dry paper to provide a key on the new paintwork, before applying a couple of coats of clear lacquer to protect the works of art. Another couple of days and the tyres were changed over, just in time for our annual outing to Leicester and the Ratae run.
