The 'Jim-Car-Nar' as it was called by someone else who cannot spell, was held on the hard stuff this year instead of grass. We were located within the main event area, and the organisation was by the SVW Register. It was a competitive fun event that everybody enjoyed.
We has a record total entry of 84 cars, including the considerable number of MGFs from Priests of Chesham. Due to the attraction and hence the delay caused by the five laps for a fiver, not all our entrants had time to compete in the Gymkhana, they did miss a treat.
For those who participated, the minor changes of some of the old favourite tests to reduce the speed hazard in the new location, were very successful. Some of the regular drivers and their passengers were having quite heated arguments, much to the amusement of our spectators. Yes, in this new location we had the pleasure of an audience. At the beginning they did not hear much of Martin Brent's excellent commentary until the speakers were turned around. He also was in competition with Murray Walker via the Rover exhibition. The Gymkhana consisted of six simple driving skill tests, the two tests that caused the most entertainment to us all, were Blind Balls and the Clover Leaf.
In the Blind Balls the driver was blindfolded and the passenger had to direct the driver so that they could put balls in buckets, quite simple is it not. John Ward in his TF had a few problems with this one.
The old favourite Clover Leaf was modified by setting a target time, with a considerable penalty for being too fast. Lynne and Robert Douglas in their superb, to quote them "its just fantastic", TB Tickford Coupe were burning rubber. However the RV8 of Tony Sherwood would have won the smoking tyre award.
The best overall performance was by Rachel Holden driving a M.G. TD with Peter Edney as the passenger/navigator. You may well ask was it the driving or the navigating that won.
We anticipate being over subscribed next year, as some of this years' audience wish to take part, having seen the large smiles on all our competitors and the fun they were all having.
My sincere thanks to all the Marshals from the SVW Register, Friends and Colleagues.
