Tenth International MG Y-Type Summer Meeting, Lennep, Germany, June 30 - July 2, 2017

by Kalle Borchers

Early on the Friday afternoon of 30 June 2017, just in time for the 70th birthday of the MG Y-Type, we met up in Remscheid for the 10th International MG Y-Type Summer Meeting. In a Spanish restaurant with San Miguel beer and Spanish wine, different languages crossed the tables again. It was a motley gathering, the advancing years causing some of the cars - and participants! - to drop out for different reasons and forcing others to make alternative arrangements. After enjoying tapas and the final, in which the national U21 team faced (and beat) Spain, we went to bed early to face the challenges of the next day.

The grey Saturday started out wet (as the name suggests) and got wetter by the hour. This may have pleased the farmers but presented a tough challenge to us, both as far as visibility and the general mood were concerned! The approximately 60-mile picture search on secondary roads through the Bergisches Land region of North Rhine-Westphalia kicked off at 10am at the exit of the car park, where the MGs were parked overnight. After only a few miles, we had to stop at a special set of controls in order to raise the general mood with the help of a glass of sparkling wine. This proved successful, and so we continued through the freshly washed air of the Bergisches Land.

En-route, we got ourselves into a special visit to the Castle Bensberg Supersports Classic Rally. The crowd was amazed by the sight of our beautiful MGs causing havoc with their light barriers. And for the first time, we had spectators and photographers while underway! We swiftly proceeded to our lunch break at the „Zum Holländer" restaurant in Lindlar. The afternoon stage led us past an ostrich farm to the next set of controls. One of those ostrich eggs would have sufficed to provide all participants with an ample helping of scrambled egg for breakfast! The return trip to Remscheid took place in an atmosphere that had been further purified by the rain, and we were all relieved when we finallly reached the shelter of the underground car park.

After tending to their faithful steeds, it was the drivers' turn to dry themselves off. Then, at last, the first „plöpp" und „plopp" could be heard - the sound the distinctive flip-top of a Flensburger Pils bottle makes when opened - followed by the hiss of cold beer. I can still hear it now! At 18.30 we met up again for dinner. The participants of the 10th MG Y-Type summer meeting were presented with their anniversary cups depicting scenes of previous events. Then awards were presented to the winners of the "special tests". The awards ceremony was accompanied by constant volleys of "plöpp" and "plopp"! By 1.30am, we were all in bed.

After breakfast, Sunday morning saw us heading for the Rhine ferry to Rath, thence via Niederaussem to Bedburg, home of the Rosengart Museum. Here, those interested were able to take part in a guided tour which briefly portrayed the life of the brilliant Lucien Rosengart and the substantial contribution he made to the French motor industry. The museum reputedly houses the largest collection of Rosengart vehicles in the world, the most successful of which was the licence-built Austin Seven of the 'Twenties. Coffee and cake were served in the adjoining beer garden. Thus refreshed, the participants embarked on their return journey to their home ports. Mercifully, the dreaded rain had subsided! And so the July weekend came to an end and with it a successful Y-Type meeting, the tenth at this venue.
