24 February 2022 - Franks Texan BBQ

February in Perth and warm balmy evenings and I had a light bulb moment that we needed to celebrate the Y Type 75th birthday. Somehow, I deemed that that the 24th of Feb was the day. This was a Thursday and fitted perfectly between our Thursday Fortnightly meetings. We could escape the Covid restrictions by having an evening meal at an outdoor restaurant. Frank's Barbecue Texas Smokehouse had both some undercover and plenty of outdoor trestle style tables under festooned lights plus we could park our MGs at the back of the restaurant behind a low fence and provide secure parking and a little display for the patrons.

We could only get two Ys along plus their cousins two TCs and an MGA. A huge choice of food on the menu and the half rack of ribs is highly recommended the meat just fell off the bone.

Sunday 30th April Northam airfield

Our second event on Sunday 30th April was a run out to Northam airfield around 60 miles east of Perth and a popular spot for early morning ballooning. This was a combined event starting with our annual Y Type Autumn Run celebrating the 75th year of the Y Type to arrive at Northam mid-morning to witness the arrival of some classic aircraft see attached flyer. On this occasion we had 4 Y Types, 4 TCs and a couple of MGAs, an MGBGTV8 and more in keeping a 1925 Amilcar!

We quite often have combined wings and wheels events but this was a new one going to Northam. Quite a mixture of aircraft including a US Texan trainer (Harvard), Nanchang, ¾ replica Spitfire (V6), looks the part but doesn’t sound like a Merlin. A couple of Tiger Moths and Chipmunks a few modern sports aircraft and an early RAAF Trainer still in original livery.

We all enjoyed some good comradery with the flyers and our picnic lunches. Late afternoon the aircraft started to leave to be home before dusk and flying into the setting sun and MGs followed. Barbara and I decided the long way home via a scenic route and coffee in Toodyay (pronounced Too jay, Aboriginal word 'Duidgee' which means 'place of plenty', referring to the richness and fertility of the area). We were spotted by Facebook contributor in Toodyay! All in all a great day out cruising around in YT Highway Cruiser!
