Gasket - Cylinder Head.

XPAG/SC2/17463 (22nd July 1952 - in Car No. YB/0614)

This was the first “group 3” engine, and it introduced a new cylinder block (only), Part No. SA.2404/11, “casting no.” 168421, with new round water circulating holes (as opposed to the pear shaped holes in earlier blocks), and a new cylinder head gasket, Part No. X.24481, with pear shaped water holes and a large rear water hole.

The background to this change was as follows:

The “TD Mark II” Midget was by this time being fitted with a cylinder block and cylinder head incorporating revised water circulating holes, ostensibly to improve circulation and cooling. (These engines were designated “XPAG/TD3/” units.) Standard engines for the normal “TD”, and also for the “YB”, would in due course be changed accordingly (no doubt when supplies of the earlier units were used up! Presumably supplies of the block were used up first, because the new cylinder head with round water holes was in both cases (“TD” and “YB”) introduced later, (at XPAG/SC2/17994 in the case of the ‘YB”)).

Great care is needed with regard to which cylinder head gasket should be used in any given situation. On earlier engines (prior to XPAG/SC2/17463), the standard gasket (Part No. MG.862/45) had pear shaped water holes and a small rear water hole. The introduction of the new block, SA.2404/11 (only), required the use of a cylinder head gasket with pear shaped holes, and a large rear water hole (Part No. X.24481). The earlier gasket was discontinued, and gasket no. X.24481 must be used whenever a new type block is fitted with an old type cylinder head, or vice versa. It can also be used for servicing earlier engines.

NB.1. When the new type block is used with the new type cylinder head, Part No. SA.2203/10, an even newer gasket, Part No. 168423, MUST be used. This has round water holes, and a large rear water hole with a reinforcing bar across the centre. (See under XPAG/SC2/17994.)

NB.2. This new cylinder block retained the machined “pad” that, on earlier blocks, was necessary for mounting the early type oil filter support bracket. The machined “pad” was the larger one that was employed on blocks with the “casting number” 24445, but on these later blocks, the three bolt holes were not provided. Likewise, the rear inlet to the oil gallery was undrilled.

NB.3. This new block did not have the “MG-in-an-octagon” badge cast into the left hand side. However, it did incorporate a small “W-in-a-diamond” motif (see Para. 9a. this chapter for details).
