You may have seen on your local news about the recent floods that have happened in Queensland, Australia. Sadly, the MG Car Club of Queensland has been severely impacted by them. Their Clubrooms have been destroyed, and although we were able to save all the significant MG Treasures, the cost in effort and time to re-build will be great. After six years of volunteer work the Clubrooms development was only weeks from completion, and they now have to start again. Several club members homes have also been badly damaged, and other MG owners have had their cars submerged in floodwater and mud for days. Among these was at least one Y Type owner.

The MG Car Club of Queensland has set up a DONATE facility where donations can be made. If you would like to donate to their flood appeal, it would be greatly appreciated.

When you make a donation, on the REVIEW screen, under Add special instructions to the seller, please indicate how you would like the funds distributed by including one of the following words:-

  • If you wish your funds to help re-build the Clubrooms, please include the word"CLUB"

  • If you wish your funds to assist in the storage of members cars whose homes have been destroyed, please include the word "HOME"

  • If you wish your funds to assist in saving/resurrecting MGs that have been damaged and submerged in the flooding, please include the word "SAVE"

  • If you wish your funds to be equally distributed to the three areas of need above, please include the word "MG".

The MGCCQ thanks you for your help however small.

The power of the internet, and its usefulness on the good side of life never ceases to amaze me. Back in May 2002 one of the first cars to join Ys on Parade was Mike Wright with Y 0368. In his dialogue, Mike said "She was originally registered by Cam gears in Luton 3/7/47. Cam Gears used to have a factory in my home town of Clevedon but unfortunately they've gone now so I can't tell them that one of their old cars is still around. I would love to know why they bought a Y for business. I suspect it had something to do with getting past the waiting list for new cars that applied just after the war." The question was a rhetorical one, but earlier this week I received an email from a web surfer who used to be an employee of Cam Gears in Luton. Cam Gears were already well known in 1947 as they had developed and supplied the Bishop Cam Gear steering in the MG TC. Derek Revell told us that it was "more likely the company bought it to experiment with the Box Steering, which was mostly why all the company car were bought, including a Jensen Interceptor and many others, not all UK cars either, I remember a Ford Pinto (US model)." So it was curiosity about the revolutionary rack and pinion steering as fitted to the MG Y that caused Cam Gears to buy the car! Mike and I enjoyed the story so, with his consent, we thought we would share this with you all!EnjoY.

Since the inception of this website many questions have been raised about the original paint specifications, recommended lubricants, correct spark plugs etc. of our cars. Many of the products available between 1947 and 1953, the period of manufacture of our cars, are no longer available or have been superseded by far superior products. Without doubt few people would now have their car sprayed with cellulose paint but will opt for 'two pack' solutions. However, restorers will want the colour to be as close to the original specification as possible. Equally, a number of the Hypoid oils readily available 50 years ago are no longer manufactured although other superior choices are available.

In recognition of this, and the ability of the International MG Y Type Register to react to the requirements of the 'Y' owning community, we have been investigating how this could be achieved. Our intention is to liaise closely with current manufacturers and bring you the information direct. We were therefore pleased to announce that we have reached a partnering agreement with PPG International — a hugely respected name in automotive paints — (see News 6 January 2011 below).

Today, we are also pleased to announce a partnering with Penrite, equally renowned for their excellent range of lubrication products. Permanent navigation access to this can be found under the Technical Centre sub-menu.

In the near future we plan to add further pages that will enable owners to interrogate current products from companies that best fulfil the requirements of our cars. We have some other initiatives taking place with respect to partnering arrangements, so keep monitoring this website as we hope to bring a number of other suppliers/manufacturers on board.

We are pleased to announce that we are now working in partnership with PPG International automotive paints. Through this collaboration we have been able to research formulas for most of the original paints used on the MG Y Type. Please visit our Colour Schemes page and click on any of the underlined words in the Paint Formula chart to bring up the formula. You can also print a copy of the colour formula too!
