South Africa Ys Month

24 March 2006

Today please welcome John Harris with Y 0364  to Ys on Parade.  John is the new custodian of the car having bought it recently from Lionel Reeves.  Because of the number of cars we now have I have had to restructure the website to put YAs, YBs and YTs in their own folder.  So if when you open the page no pictures appear place your mouse in the page (on some text), right click, and select REFRESH from the options list.

Two new suppliers have been added to the Links page - Chris Swale from South Africa, and Enrique Llinares from the UK.

Chris Swale has been a lifelong MG enthusiast and it is fortunate that he is also the owner of Chris Swale Motors cc in Durban, South Africa.  Chris' specialises in servicing and repairs to MGs (amongst other makes) and is familiar from XPAG powered MGs (Ts &Ys).  David Pelham visited his workshop last month and reported seeing at least three MGBs, a YT and the latest TF 160  amongst the Mercedes and BMWs.

The Veneered Dashboard on Y Types is one of those items that makes the Y stand out from its peer group. Unfortunately when the dashboard and door cappings need to be renewed it is rare that one is able to find a good restorer. Bob Wilmot in South Africa has found such a person in Enrique Llinares, based in Lancashire, UK. Bob's dashboard has been completely restored by him and Bob has endorsed his work and as a consequence he has been added to our recommended suppliers.  Click here for a picture of Enrique's work.

Finally, Mike and Lynette Burden have sent in a new photograph of their car for Ys on Parade.  Mike says "At long last, it is on the road. Its had a few teething problems, as expected. Hope to enjoy many miles of motoring." - we all wish you that too Mike, EnjoY.

300Ys on Parade - yes, 300.  Please welcome Joe de Castro with Y 2063, and Tommy Kirkland with Y 5165, both from South Africa, to Ys on Parade, bringing the total of Ys on the web to 300!

Just to keep you occupied I have also posted another picture puzzle for you to solve - 56 pieces this time.

Today, please welcome Rodger Lawson with Y 1674, and Francois van Tonder with YT 4923 from South Africa, and also Matthew Crawford with Y 3847 to Ys on Parade.  Matthew's car is yet another 'new' car to the register.  We are now have 298 cars on Ys on Parade, and South Africa having 8 cars has moved up into 4th place in the league!  In line with this month having a "South African" theme - you may have noticed that the background of this page has a South African flag.  Neatly by turning this through 90 degrees we also have a nice Y too!  Good flag design, thank you South Africa!!

It has been a long time since we had a new Hint and Tip, but Neil Cairns has asked me to post a comment from Peter Vielvoyle regarding increasing the efficiency of your heater (if you have one fitted to your Y!).  It was useful for me, and I am sure other will also find it useful too, to run down the page.  I was reminded of so many of the useful little tips on this page: very useful at all times, but extremely useful if you are in a rebuild programme right now with your car.

The mid-month reprinted article is from Enjoying MG March 1993 and is now available from Reprinted Articles.

Back in May 2003 we added a picture of an MG Y by Ian Guy to Artists Impressions.  We are delighted that Ian has done another painting with a Y in it which he has also kindly consented to us showing on Artists Impressions.  If artwork like this interests you, there is also a link to Ian's website where he shows his working drawings for the picture.  Thanks Ian - great picture.

The Oscars are just over, and it was obviously a dangerous thing to say on the Bulletin Board about starting a new page for Ys on Film if I could be provided with either stills, or video clips (preferably both), but here is the genesis of a new development.  As of yet we don't have a video clip, but we can bring you a 'still' from the 1953 film set in 1942, but featuring a YT a slight continuity error, but a great car ... and a great film!

Ys on Film can be accessed at any time under the Artistic Ys button from the main menu.

Please welcome Bob Wilmot with Y 1974, and new owners of YT 2587 Rodger Lawson and Dave Wheeler to Ys on Parade: both are from South Africa which now has 6 cars and is in 6th place on the table of cars by country: we have 295 cars in total!

Also, a new Collectible poster has been added to the Collectibles page.

The updating of the website for emails has now been completed.  If you experience any difficulties you can contact the webmaster through the Contact Us page.

1 March 2006

Welcome to March 2006!  This month, following David Pelham's return from South Africa, much of the news this month will centre around his trip, and the people and Y Types he met with.  To begin with this month's Picture of the Month is from South Africa.

Also, he tells me, South Africa is set to climb the country charts in Ys on Parade as he has brought back a few additional details to share with the world of Y Types.  Perhaps, from our 'YT expert', it will be no surprise that we begin with two YTs from Chris Swale with YT 2582 and YT 3430.

The month's Reprinted Article though is not from South Africa, but features Brian Cox's Y Type in a rebuild study from Practical Classics October 1991.

Finally, Paul Sanderson has kindly given us permission to use his stereo photograph on the website and has also provided a version which can be either viewed on screen or printed to give the 3D effect by simply going cross-eyed (as opposed to having to have a stereoscope).  See the Collectibles page for details.
